Citizenship Ministry holds back BRL 3.1 billion in aid

Responsible for implementing numerous measures to counter the economic impacts of Covid-19 — including the BRL 600 emergency salary to informal workers — the Citizenship Ministry has received over BRL 3.1 billion (USD 560 million) from the federal government to fight the disease. As of last Friday, however, Folha de S.Paulo reported the ministry had not even started processing payments. According to aides of Citizenship Minister Onyx Lorenzoni, the delay happened due to the May 1 public holiday.
