Northeast faces imminent healthcare collapse, says governor

During a meeting of the center-left Workers’ Party, Piauí State Governor Wellington Dias said that healthcare systems in Brazil’s Northeast are set to collapse within the coming weeks. More precisely, Mr. Dias said the breaking point would come between May 15 and 20.

According to the governor, the number of confirmed cases in the region is doubling every five days. Moreover, some states are facing additional challenges: while some are receiving waves of patients from other states, others are facing a spike in infected healthcare workers. Also present at the meeting, Bahia Governor Rui Costa said 12 percent of his state’s Covid-19 patients are health professionals, reducing their capacity to combat the coronavirus.

Governors claim that, without financial aid from the federal government, states will fall into financial collapse, compounding the pandemonium in their healthcare systems.
