Social isolation falls, São Paulo discusses blocking main roads

The state of São Paulo registered its lowest social isolation rate for a weekend on Saturday and Sunday, coming in at just 52 and 58 percent, respectively. The lack of compliance led Mayor Bruno Covas to float the possibility of closing main streets and avenues as a way to tighten social isolation rules. 

On Monday, city officials set up blockades along the busy Radial Leste avenue, which runs from the city center to the densely populated east zone of São Paulo. Traffic guards measured drivers’ temperatures and handed out awareness pamphlets and surgical masks in what was seen as a test for a more rigid quarantine.
