How Covid-19 has affected federal servants

So far, there have only been 165 cases of Covid-19 infections among civil servants in Brazil, but the number of public employees working remotely or on leave due to sanitary precautions amounts to 78,947, according to the Economy Ministry.

The Economy Ministry in itself is 25,777 workers down during the pandemic, making it the most affected government agency. Perhaps unsurprisingly, the Health Ministry has the highest number of confirmed cases: 88. The information was obtained by Fiquem Sabendo, a pro-freedom press organization that carries out its reporting based on Access to Information Act requests.

It is important to highlight that the real numbers could be higher, as the Economy Ministry only conducted an online survey, meaning that some government bodies may not have filled out their forms. Furthermore, medical confidentiality rules that civil servants are not obligated to disclose their diagnoses. Previous reports informed that 91 employees of Brazil’s federally-owned post office Correios had tested positive for Covid-19. In the Brazilian Air Force, confirmed cases amount to 36 — with 882 suspected patients.
