Manaus, the capital of the northern state of Amazonas, recorded its highest number of funerals in a single day since the beginning of the Covid-19 pandemic: 140 burials and two cremations on April 26 alone. Among the deaths, ten had tested positive for Covid-19, while 47 died of acute respiratory distress syndrome — for 28 people, the cause of death was not determined. As news website UOL reported, 41 people died at home, a phenomenon Mayor Arthur Virgilio had already blamed on the collapse of the local healthcare system.
Amazonas is one of the hardest-hit states by Covid-19, with 973 confirmed cases per 1 million people — the second-highest in the country — and 64.2 deaths per 1 million people — the most out of all 27 states.
