Supreme Court greenlights probe into anti-quarantine rallies

Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes has granted the prosecutor general’s request for a probe into the involvement of federal lawmakers in Sunday’s anti-quarantine protests. Not because people went against social isolation measures, but because, in most cases, demonstrators also supported a military coup and the shutdown of Congress and the Supreme Court.

The National Security Law criminalizes acts against the democratic order.

Members of Jair Bolsonaro’s yet-to-be-registered Alliance for Brazil party reportedly quarterbacked protests in Rio de Janeiro, Minas Gerais, and Brasília.

The move seems more like a political stunt by Prosecutor General Augusto Aras. Since being named for the job last year, he has bent over backwards not to interfere with President Bolsonaro’s interests.

The future will tell us how serious the probe is.
