Oil companies in Brazil have recorded 126 Covid-19 cases among employees — including 74 people who recently worked on Petrobras offshore oil platforms. The information was confirmed by the National Petroleum Agency on Tuesday.

In an email to news agency Reuters, the regulator said that another 897 suspected cases were being monitored in the oil industry, which is one of the driving forces of the Brazilian economy. In comparison to platforms in the Gulf of Mexico and the North Sea, the reality in Brazil’s offshore fields appears to be worse.

The Brazilian oil industry has had to endure several shocks this year: besides the  Covid-19 pandemic — which plummeted oil prices and triggered a brief price war between Russia and Saudi Arabia — Petrobras workers went on a 20-day strike late in February.
