Brazil’s National Supplementary Health Agency (ANS) will give private health insurance companies BRL 15 million (USD 2.96 million) to help cover costs they cannot afford. In return, these companies will continue to provide coverage to individuals who have unpaid premiums. The money will come from a mandatory emergency fund that health insurance companies are required to maintain. Known as the “technical reserve,” resources in this fund total BRL 54 billion. The number of Brazilians who have private healthcare plans rose by 123,000 in February, now reaching 47 million citizens, according to the ANS.
