Copacabana Palace closes for the first time in nearly 100 years

Rio de Janeiro’s iconic Copacabana Palace joined over 60 other Rio de Janeiro hotels and closed its doors for the first time in 97 years this Monday. The decision came after the hotel’s occupancy rate fell to 36 percent — that is, 105 of the 293 available rooms — in March. The hotel had already decided to send some of its 515 employees home, including 11 workers aged over 60.

The hotel expects to reopen for business in late May.
