City welds football field gates shut

The municipality of Ponta Grossa, in the southern state of Paraná, ordered to cut the energy supply and weld the gates of 42 football fields in the city to prevent them from being used — a measure to avoid public gatherings amid the Covid-19 pandemic. According to authorities, the use of police-like yellow tape has not been enough to keep citizens from playing football, leading to the adoption of more drastic measures. Municipal guards will guard the venues.

The 311,611-people city of Ponta Grossa has five confirmed Covid-19 infections — and no deaths so far. The state of Paraná has almost 50 infections for every 1 million inhabitants.
