Manaus mayor: Amazonas health system in ‘collapse’

Manaus Mayor Arthur Virgílio Neto posted a video on Twitter saying the healthcare network of the Amazonas state (of which Manaus is the capital) has collapsed.

“The state hospital network has collapsed; it is no longer able to meet demand due to Covid-19,” said Mr. Virgílio Neto. “Elective surgeries in all hospitals have been postponed.”

Speaking in a press conference on Friday, Health Minister Luiz Henrique Mandetta said that the city had entered the list of “critical locations” in the Covid-19 spread, announcing that his department ordered 15 ventilators to be sent to the city from Rio de Janeiro.

Earlier today, newspaper Folha de S. Paulo published a report on the precarious health and housing situations of thousands of inhabitants of poorest neighborhoods, built on stilts above the city’s polluted streams, less than one kilometer from Manaus’ center.

As of Sunday, Manaus has recorded 379 cases of Covid-19, with 11 deaths.
