The National Department of Prisons has suspended visits from relatives and even lawyers for inmates, as well as educational, religious and work activities in federal prisons for 30 days, as an attempt to prevent Covid-19 from spreading to Brazil’s overcrowded and poorly maintained prison system.
The department had already suspended visits in several of its units for 15 days. Lawyers will be allowed to visit only for urgent matters. According to the new rules, federal prisons are required to protect inmates older than 60 years old or who have chronic conditions, as well as isolate any suspected or confirmed cases of Covid-19.
