Brazil to repatriate 410 nationals from Peru

Brazil’s Foreign Affairs Ministry released a statement announcing the repatriation of 410 Brazilian tourists currently in Peru. They were detained in Lima and Cuzco when the Peruvian government decided to close the borders. Special flights are scheduled for Friday in a joint operation between the Brazilian Embassy in Lima and airlines Latam and Gol.

Before the announcement, Brazilian nationals stuck in Peru complained about the government’s lack of effort to repatriate them. It took a lot of social media mobilization to convince the ministry—similar to what happened to Brazilians in Wuhan earlier this year.

On Thursday, the Brazilian government said there are currently 3,770 Brazilians in Peru. President Martín Vizcarra has imposed severe measures to contain the coronavirus spread—including a curfew between 8 pm and 5 am.
