A new batch of 63,000 Pfizer Covid-19 vaccine doses arrived in Panama this week, bringing the country’s total supplies up to 350,000 jabs — 78 percent of the purchases made for the first quarter, says the Health Ministry.
The Central American country began its vaccine rollout on January 20 and, as of today, it has vaccinated over 6 percent of its population. In early January, Panama saw a peak of coronavirus cases, with some days exceeding 5,000 new infections.
Panama has the third-largest death rate per million inhabitants: 1,386. Only Mexico (1,504) and Peru (1,476) are above. Brazil sits fourth, with 1,309 deaths per million people.
