Brazil’s President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva on Wednesday announced that his administration is set to send support to Chile, whose southern regions have been devastated by forest fires. Since fires began last week, 24 people have died, while thousands of hectares of forest and homes have been razed.
President Lula spoke with his Chilean counterpart Gabriel Boric on the phone today. According to Lula, Brazilian Air Force planes will be deployed to help Chilean authorities fight the flames amid high temperatures and heavy winds. Lula did not specify what further type of aid might be sent.
Many nations in Latin America and beyond have assisted Chile in the last few days.
Earlier this week, President Boric thanked Mexico’s Andrés Manuel ‘AMLO’ López Obrador for the dispatch of a 30-people brigade that traveled to Chile’s fire-hit zones alongside army personnel. The governments of Argentina and Colombia also announced aid measures.
