Brazil’s labor figures stay robust, with 278,000 jobs added in June

Brazil’s Labor Ministry reported on Thursday that almost 278,000 net jobs were created in the country last month.

It was the second-best monthly performance of the year, which has seen a six-month streak of positive results — after the economy shredded over 287,000 jobs in December. Since January, Brazil has added a total of 1.48 million jobs.

The government celebrated the result. “We had a goal to create roughly 1.5 million new jobs,” said Labor Minister José Carlos Oliveira. “In six months, we have reached those figures, so we can allow ourselves to dream with a very positive end of the year.”

According to officials, the positive streak in terms of job creation reflects economic strength, as emergency job maintenance programs had ended back in August 2021.

But while job growth is still growing fast, with unemployment dipping below 10 percent in May for the first time in six years, entry-level wages keep getting smaller.

On average, newly-hired employees earn BRL 1,922 (USD 370) a month, less than twice the minimum wage in Brazil. The number represents a slight decrease from the previous month but sits 5 percent below its levels from a year ago.
