Brazilian voters not expecting “new ideas” from frontrunners

The latest Ipespe opinion poll is out, showing similar numbers to last week’s survey. Frontrunners Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva and Jair Bolsonaro remain on 45 and 34 percent of voting intentions, respectively.

One interesting aspect of this week’s survey, however, was a question asking voters which candidate they associate with certain political and personal traits.

Mr. Bolsonaro and Lula fare better than any other — also because their name recognition is much higher than the rest of the pack — but their scores were much lower when it came to intelligence, honesty, and, especially, new ideas.

The result is not necessarily surprising, considering we have a former two-term president running against the incumbent. But it also shows how Brazilian politics has not been able to oxygenate itself in terms of leadership, proposals, and style.
