Brazil expects bigger grain harvest in 2022

The Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE) published its new grain harvest estimates for the year. The institute expects output to top 265 million tons in 2022, up by 3.3 percent from 2021.

The new estimates are 1 percent higher than those from March, despite soybean farmers in the South being affected by drought at the beginning of the year — which may lower production by as much as 12.2 percent from 2021.

For rice, the estimate is 10.6 million tons, down 8.5 percent from the previous harvest. In the case of corn, a 1.4-percent drop is expected in the first harvest and a 39.4-percent bump in the second.

The institute points out that the area to be harvested will reach 71.9 million tons, a 4.9-percent increase from 2021 (more than 3.4 million hectares) and 0.2 percent more than indicated in the previous projection.
