Starting on Friday, Brazil’s Supreme Court will begin a remote trial to decide whether the House Speaker must adhere to time limits when analyzing impeachment requests against a sitting president.

There are currently 143 requests in Congress to remove President Jair Bolsonaro, yet Speaker Arthur Lira has simply ignored them.

Back in September, Justice Cármen Lúcia spoke out against imposing deadlines, feeling that it would not be right for the Judiciary to interfere in congressional matters.

Given the proximity to the election — and recent tensions between President Jair Bolsonaro and the Supreme Court — the majority of the other ten justices are expected to agree with Justice Lúcia’s interpretation.
