Rio lifts vaccine mandates for indoor spaces

Rio de Janeiro Mayor Eduardo Paes announced on Monday that city officials will no longer enforce vaccine mandates. A decree confirming the decision — recommended by the city’s Covid committee — was published in today’s municipal official gazette.

Vaccine mandates had been enforced in Rio de Janeiro since September of last year for access to indoor spaces such as sporting events, theaters, concert halls, and museums, among others.

“The decision was based on the city’s current epidemiological situation, which remains favorable and stable, and a change could happen if that scenario changes,” said the city’s health authorities, in a statement. In March, Rio de Janeiro was the first Brazilian state capital to remove mask mandates.

The initial plan was to lift vaccine requirements once 70 percent of the population had received at least one booster shot — but less than 63 percent have so far. The city plans to administer a second booster shot to all citizens over 60 by next month.
