Brazil wants to greenlight private Covid vaccination

With 88 percent of Brazilians eligible for Covid vaccines having taken at least one dose, the Health Ministry is reportedly ready to authorize the private health sector to begin administering coronavirus jabs. 

In the early stages of the pandemic, when vaccines were in short supply, Congress and health organizations stood against allowing private operators to administer immunizers. They feared that would restrict protection against the coronavirus to wealthier populations.

The move would also help the government to create a narrative that the pandemic is over in Brazil, despite the World Health Organization recently saying countries should not lower their guards. Still, almost half of Brazilians believe the pandemic is over in Brazil, per a recent poll.

Despite the government’s wishes, any change to vaccine legislation would have to be approved by Congress.
