Five months after Maranhão, Santa Catarina, and Mato Grosso do Sul became the first Brazilian states to lift mask mandates in outdoor spaces, Paraíba, a northeastern state, today became the 27th and last state to follow suit.
So far, mask mandates for indoor spaces remain in force in 12 states, though have been scrapped in the other 15. All state capitals, except for Belém (Pará) have also lifted mandates for indoor spaces.
Experts point the lower usage of facemasks as a factor in accelerating a flu epidemic that has killed over 1,700 people in Brazil between January and February.
