The Brazilian government will send a Brazilian Air Force cargo plane to Poland on Monday (March 7) to repatriate Brazilian nationals fleeing Ukraine — one week and a half after Russian troops invaded the Eastern European country.
An Embraer KC-390 Millennium multi-mission aircraft will leave the Brasília Air Base on Monday afternoon bound for Warsaw — where it will pick up the stranded Brazilians. The Foreign Affairs Ministry will coordinate the rescue mission, along with military officials.
A second plane is ready for use if necessary, the government says.
Brazil will also take 11.5 tons of humanitarian aid material to Europe, donated to help civilians affected by the war. The flight will make stops in Recife, Cape Verde, and Lisbon — and return to Brazil on Thursday morning (March 10). Furthermore, President Jair Bolsonaro will sign a decree granting six-month humanitarian visas to Ukrainians, with the possibility of benefiting citizens settling in Brazil definitively.
According to the government, there are around 80 Brazilian citizens still in Ukraine. Last week, the Brazilian Embassy in Kyiv informed Brazilians of a train leaving for Romania — but added that it could not do anything to ensure their safety.
