The Brazilian Federal Police opened a formal investigation into President Jair Bolsonaro for crimes against public health. During a Facebook Live broadcast back in October 2021, Mr. Bolsonaro insinuated that Covid vaccines may be linked to AIDS.

Mr. Bolsonaro affirmed that “official reports from the British government” highlighted a trend of fully vaccinated individuals developing AIDS at a faster pace than expected. The UK government quickly stated that the reports were fabricated. Social media platforms removed the video after users flagged its content.

The decision to open an inquiry was made on February 25 and forwarded to the Supreme Court on Wednesday. Brazil’s highest court is already investigating the allegations on its own, after a request by a Senate committee that scrutinized the government’s Covid response.
