U.S. calls for “greater environmental commitments” from Brazil

The American Embassy in Brasília this morning stressed the need for Brazil and the U.S. to step up their climate commitments ahead of COP27 in November of this year.

On Wednesday, an interministerial committee will discuss Brazil’s updated National Determined Contribution to the Paris Agreement, as announced at COP26 in October. As revealed by The Brazilian Report on Saturday, the draft represents a step backward in the country’s climate ambitions compared to its 2015 environmental pledges.

“We welcomed Brazil’s ambitious goals announced in COP26, including zero deforestation by 2028 and Brazil’s participation in the Global Methane pledge. It remains a global challenge to turn NDC pledges into reality, and to keep the globe on a pathway to limit global temperatures from rising beyond 1.5 degrees centigrade,” said a U.S. Embassy spokesperson. “All countries, Brazil and the U.S. included, will need to make, and realize, even greater commitments at COP 27 and beyond,” it adds.

According to the statement, U.S. officials are in close contact with Brazilian authorities and other partners “to protect and preserve the planet we all share.”
