Almost 3,000 families displaced due to heavy rains in Marabá

The northern Brazilian city of Marabá has become the latest in a long line of areas severely affected by extreme rains in 2022. Recent floods have already gone down as the worst in two decades, leaving at least 2,975 families displaced, and 435 riverine communities stranded. 

Marabá is located between the Itacaiúnas and Tocantins rivers, making it particularly susceptible to floods. Heavy rains caused the level of the Tocantins river to double to more than 12 meters within a week, according to official data.

Forces from the Civil Defense, Navy, and Army have established three rescue shifts to assist the affected population.
