During a phone conversation with Brazil’s Economy Minister Paulo Guedes, U.S. Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen congratulated Brazil on beginning its OECD accession process — but took the opportunity to remind the Bolsonaro administration of the environmental commitments it has made, including protecting the Amazon rainforest.
“She discussed the importance of […] market-based solutions to address Brazil’s challenges in protecting the Amazon Basin,” said the Treasury Department in a statement. As we showed in today’s issue of the Brazil Daily newsletter, last month had the highest Amazon deforestation rates for any January on record.
From the Brazilian end, Mr. Guedes expressed his willingness to cooperate with the Biden administration on discussions to implement a global digital services tax drafted at the G20 and the OECD.
