Brazil breaks 24-hour Covid-19 case record for second day running

According to the National Council of State Health Secretariats (Conass), Brazil recorded a whopping 204,854 new Covid-19 infections in the last 24 hours — a daily case record. With the Omicron variant spreading across the country like wildfire, Brazil had already broken its daily case record yesterday, with the Health Ministry reporting over 137,000 new cases. Today’s figures, meanwhile, are 49.4 percent higher.

Conass measures Brazil’s rolling seven-day average of new cases at 99,974 — the highest since the beginning of the pandemic.

Meanwhile, deaths remain comparatively low, with states recording 338 coronavirus-related fatalities in the last 24 hours. This disparity has been put down to the less severe nature of the Omicron variant, as well as the increase in vaccination levels across Brazil. According to Our World in Data, 68.94 percent of the population has received two doses of Covid-19 vaccine, or the single-shot Janssen immunizer.
