Despite high vaccination rates, cities in São Paulo cancel 2022 Carnival celebrations

Brazil has already fully vaccinated over 80 percent of its adult population, but dozens of cities in the interior of São Paulo state are erring on the side of caution when it comes to 2022’s carnival celebrations. Citing risks of an increase in Covid infections caused by large gatherings, at least 70 municipal administrations have canceled celebrations for next year.

The city of São Paulo itself will decide whether to hold its street Carnival celebrations by the end of the year, according to authorities. Street parades are confirmed in Rio de Janeiro, with over 500 so-called “blocos” already scheduled.

Many infectious disease experts are against holding Carnival celebrations next year, saying that a large share of the Brazilian population has only recently been immunized — and remains exposed to new infections. Moreover, new Covid spikes in Europe and in part of the U.S. could favor the appearance of new, more resistant variants of the coronavirus.
