Petrobras finds deepwater oil in Santos basin

In an official statement on Friday, Brazilian oil and gas giant Petrobras announced it has discovered oil in a pioneer well 1,905 meters under sea level, roughly 240 kilometers from the southeastern city of Santos, home to Latin America’s biggest port.

“The oil-bearing interval was verified through wireline logging and fluid samples, which will be further characterized through laboratory analysis,” said the company.

The newfound well is located within the Aram block, operated by Petrobras. The Brazilian firm acquired an 80-percent stake in the area during a March 2020 auction, with China’s CNODC holding the remaining 20 percent.

“The drilling of the Curaçao well demonstrates the success of a strategy strongly based on technological innovations, with maximum use of processed data in real-time, allowing for quick and safe decision-making,” the firm said.
