Butantan: Health Ministry not interested in buying more CoronaVac

Brazil’s Health Ministry no longer wants to buy new doses of the CoronaVac Covid-19 vaccine, according to Dimas Covas, head of the São Paulo-based Butantan Biological Institute

“I met with the ministry’s executive secretary [Rodrigo Otávio] last week to offer more vaccines because we have 15 million doses available,” said Mr. Covas, during a press conference on Wednesday afternoon. “He told us no, but that he could re-evaluate his opinion if [the immunizer] is approved for use in children and teenagers.”

Meanwhile, São Paulo Governor João Doria said he will buy all the CoronaVac doses necessary to complete the state’s vaccination cycle for this year and the next. This Thursday, the state begins applying booster shots to the adult population. Roughly 710,000 people are currently eligible to take a third jab.
