Bolsonaro to formally join Liberal Party in 12 days

Brazil’s center-right Liberal Party (PL) will host an event in capital Brasília to welcome President Jair Bolsonaro as its new member. Party chairman Valdemar Costa Neto — who was convicted for corruption a decade ago — will hold a political rally on November 22.

Perhaps more than welcoming Mr. Bolsonaro’s arrival, Mr. Costa Neto will celebrate his party’s return to the center of Brazilian politics, being home to a president for the first time in its history.

The PL briefly held the vice presidency during the Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva administration (2003-2010), through the late conservative businessman José Alencar. In 2005, however, Mr. Alencar left the party.

Within the Bolsonaro administration, the PL already occupies the Secretary of Government office, which works as a liaison with Congress.
