Despite being Brazil’s second-richest state, Rio de Janeiro has lost six positions in the competitiveness ranking put together by think tank CLP (Center for Public Leadership), in partnership with consultancy firm Tendências. The state now ranks just 17th (out of 27) in terms of competitiveness.
The ranking is topped by São Paulo, which is by far the country’s richest state and home to 20 percent of the Brazilian population. Next come Santa Catarina and the Federal District, states with the highest per capita GDP in Brazil.
The bottom 10 positions feature only states in the North and Northeast regions — the poorest and least developed in the country.
