After twice delaying its analysis of Brazil’s 5G bidding notice, national telecoms regulator Anatel scheduled its final vote on the matter for this Friday. If approved, the invitation for bids will be published within 30 days, finally allowing Brazil’s 5G auction to take place.
Anatel’s board is two weeks behind schedule to analyze the 5G bidding notice, having received the go-ahead from the Federal Accounts Court (TCU) on August 25.
One of the reasons for the delay was issues flagged up by the TCU, principally with regard to plans for a private government 5G network, foreseeing only the participation of state-owned telecom company Telebrás. Another sticking point concerns a project to take fiber-optic broadband to cities in Brazil’s poor North region, with Anatel board members finding a lack of clear government guidelines to make the initiative feasible.
Friday’s board meeting is scheduled for 10 am.
