Uruguay’s drive to give its citizens a third shot of the Covid-19 vaccine is progressing fast, with more than 400,000 people (in a country of 3.5 million) already given an additional Pfizer jab, among them President Luis Lacalle Pou.
The country is offering a Pfizer booster jab to Uruguayans who received two shots of the somewhat less effective Sinovac vaccine — a move that has sparked controversy globally given expert recommendations that countries with large amounts of unvaccinated people should be prioritized instead.
Uruguay is hoping that a fully immunized country should be ready to safely host a normal tourism season this summer, a key feature of the country’s economy.
