Pfizer announces production of coronavirus vaccines in Brazil

American and German pharmaceutical firms Pfizer and BioNTech announced on Thursday that they will produce Covid-19 vaccines in Brazil in partnership with homegrown laboratory Eurofarma. The Comirnaty vaccine will be manufactured by the Brazilian firm and distributed throughout Latin America.

According to an official statement, the companies’ expectation is that production will start in 2022, manufacturing more than 100 million doses per year. Technical transfer, on-site development, and installation of equipment should start immediately. 

Also according to the statement, the RNA production process of the drug substance will be carried out at Pfizer’s facilities in the U.S. Eurofarma has 10 drug factories, three of them in Brazil. The company is also present in 20 Latin American countries. With the agreement, Pfizer and BioNTech will extend the production of their coronavirus vaccine to 20 factories on four continents.
