Court suspends corruption complaint against Flávio Bolsonaro

Justice João Otávio Noronha, a member of the Superior Court of Justice (STJ), moved to suspend the processing of a corruption complaint against Senator Flávio Bolsonaro — the president’s eldest son — and former military police officer Fabrício Queiroz. The pair are suspected of being involved in an illegal salary garnishment scheme, by which Mr. Bolsonaro’s staffers had part of their paychecks withheld by the president’s son.

The latest development comes off the back of a February decision to annul the disclosure of confidential banking and tax information of Flávio Bolsonaro and over 100 other suspect individuals and companies.

The defense counsel of Mr. Queiroz — a long-time friend of President Jair Bolsonaro who worked as an aide and driver for his eldest son — requested the suspension of the criminal complaint, as it used data obtained from confidential banking information.

Mr. Noronha had issued a series of decisions in favor of President Bolsonaro and his family, and the head of state described his relationship with the STJ justice as “love at first sight.”
