The government in Chile decided to extend border closures to foreign travelers until July 25. Previously approved regulations were set to expire this week.

The decision was suggested by the Chilean Health Ministry due to concerns over the highly contagious Delta coronavirus variant. However, as the country’s vaccination campaign is the most advanced in the continent — 60 percent of Chileans have been immunized so far — the so-called ‘step by step’ reopening plan continues.

As of today, Chile reports 1.6 million confirmed coronavirus cases and over 34,000 deaths. On account of its solid vaccination program, the country saw an abrupt decline in Covid-19 figures in July.
