The Federal Police has opened an inquiry to investigate alleged malfeasance by President Jair Bolsonaro in regards to the Covaxin scandal.
The investigation is based on Congressman Luis Miranda’s complaint that Mr. Bolsonaro knew about suspected irregularities in negotiations for 20 million doses of the Indian-made immunizer. The president was reportedly informed by Mr. Miranda himself, during a meeting at the presidential palace on March 20.
In recent public statements, Mr. Bolsonaro confirmed the meeting took place, but did not reveal the content of the conversation.
On June 30, the Federal Police opened an inquiry to investigate corruption suspicions involving the Covaxin vaccine, currently being investigated by the Senate’s Covid hearings committee.
According to Congressman Luis Miranda and his brother Luis Ricardo Miranda, a senior Health Ministry official, vaccine doses were overpriced and the deal was brokered by a shady company facing multiple corruption accusations.
