A few days before the 2021 Copa America final between Brazil and Argentina, South American football confederation Conmebol announced the donation of 20,000 Sinovac vaccines to Brazil.
The decision was framed as an “act of solidarity” after the Brazilian government offered to host the football tournament at a moment’s notice after Colombia and Argentina abdicated from hosting duties just weeks before the competition’s kick-off. At least 165 new coronavirus cases have been linked directly to the tournament — 37 were players, coaches, trainers, and other team personnel. The other 125 were drivers, caterers, cleaners, and others contractors.
In April, Conmebol received 50,000 vaccines from Sinovac to be given to footballers and delegations taking part in the Copa America and other regional tournaments. Some Brazilian clubs were vaccinated during continental matches in Paraguay.
Conmebol announced that, of the 20,000 doses sent to Brazil, “5,000 will be for football, while the destination of the rest will be decided by the Brazilian government.”Go deeper: South American football heads say: “What pandemic?”
