Governor João Doria of São Paulo announced on Tuesday a BRL 300 (USD 60) monthly-aid program to benefit families of Covid-19 victims.
The initiative, entitled SP Acolhe (loosely translated as “São Paulo Cares”), will support families with a total monthly income of up to three minimum wages who have lost at least one family relative to the coronavirus since March 2020.
According to state authorities, around 11,000 families will benefit from the program, with a total outlay of BRL 20 million. Families will receive a total of BRL 1,800 spread over six months until December. Similar measures were adopted in Peru, one of South America’s coronavirus hotbeds, where ‘Covid-19 orphans’ began receiving monthly financial support.
