The Gamma coronavirus variant, first detected in the Brazilian Amazon, is already the prevalent mutation in Argentina according to recent Health Ministry reports.

According to authorities, the Gamma variant is predominant across “every region in the country,” demanding attention from Argentinian health officials. Preliminary studies show the variant to be more transmissible and lethal than previous forms of Sars-COV-2, and has now been singled out as Argentina’s dominant variant after analysis of over 1,000 samples by the local National Institute of Infectious Diseases (INEI-ANLIS).

The propagation of coronavirus variants is a problem for Argentinian health officials, as the country is continuously breaking daily records of deaths and infections.
