Speaker schedules reform talks for this week

Brazilian House Speaker Arthur Lira scheduled meetings with party leaders to discuss the processing of two major reforms: one changing electoral rules and another overhauling Brazil’s public service, the so-called “administrative reform.”

Talks over the latter will take place on Tuesday, after the House’s Constitution and Justice Committee approved the reform proposal. It will now be analyzed by a special committee before it is put to a floor vote.

Regarding electoral reform, there are multiple fronts under discussion. A special committee is debating the possibility of reinstating paper ballots to Brazil’s 100-percent electronic voting system, while lawmakers are debating the possibility of changing congressional races to single-member district votes.
