Former Health Minister Eduardo Pazuello has been appointed to a position within the Secretariat of Strategic Matters. The office is responsible for drafting long-term policies and nationwide strategies in areas such as security, defense, foreign policy, and social policies, and works within the presidential palace.
Mr. Pazuello is facing criminal investigation for his alleged role in the oxygen crisis in the Amazonian city of Manaus in January. Prosecutors claim he knew about the imminent shortage of oxygen supplies in the city but failed to act for days — thus allowing dozens of patients to die from asphyxiation in Manaus hospitals.
An active Army general, Mr. Pazuello also faces disciplinary proceedings within the Armed Forces. He broke regulations by joining President Jair Bolsonaro at a political rally last month. Sources in Brasília say he should get away with a mere warning, thanks to pressure from the president on the head of the Brazilian army.
