São Paulo confirms new infection of Indian variant

São Paulo’s Adolfo Lutz Institute confirmed the state’s first infection with the Indian coronavirus variant. The patient is a 32-year-old man who arrived from India on May 22.

The patient lives in the city of Campo dos Goytacazes, in the neighboring state of Rio de Janeiro. He took a Covid-19 test upon arrival at São Paulo’s Guarulhos International Airport, and was allowed to travel home without receiving his results.

The latest episode of our Explaining Brazil podcast discusses how the arrival of the Indian variant could be a game-changer to Brazil’s pandemic. Vaccination rollouts are losing steam and infection rates are rising in all regions of the country.
