China sends 500,000 Sinovac doses to El Salvador

The government of El Salvador reported the arrival of 500,000 vaccines from China. Now, the Central American nation has a total of 2.5 million doses available.

El Salvador has received five batches of vaccines from China so far this year. However, it has only managed to fully vaccinate 6 percent of its population so far. A modest figure, yet significantly better than neighbors Honduras and Guatemala.

Supporting strict restrictions since the beginning of the pandemic, President Nayib Bukele is pursuing multiple vaccine negotiations to curb the spread of the virus. In early May, the leader announced a deal with Pfizer that could provide 4.4 million doses by year-end.

El Salvador has one of Latin America’s lowest rates of Covid-19 cases and deaths, with 71,479 confirmed infections and 2,195 fatalities.
