Amid a furious coronavirus wave, Argentina reported an all-time record of new daily confirmed deaths and infections on Tuesday, with 745 casualties and 35,543 cases. Those figures place the country among the world’s top five active coronavirus hotbeds.
After suffering several legal setbacks against his restriction orders, President Alberto Fernández said the latest coronavirus peak is “a serious problem” and “the result of saying life needs to go on as if nothing is happening.”
Since the Covid-19 curve has been on a rise, the federal government managed to extend restrictions in the worst-affected regions until May 21.
As of today, Argentina is one of the three countries in Latin America (alongside Brazil and Colombia) that has surpassed 3 million coronavirus cases. Total deaths sit at 71,700. Meanwhile, the country has administered just 10.2 million vaccines, with 4.6 percent of the population fully immunized.
