Argentina’s Health Ministry reported that three tourists tested positive for the Indian and South African coronavirus variants. They are now under a 14-day quarantine in hotels in the capital of Buenos Aires.
Authorities say multiple variants have been detected “since [they] started monitoring genomic sequencing in travelers,” but this was the first time the B.1.617.2, B.1.617.1 (from India), and B.1.351 (from South Africa) variants had been found.
The World Health Organization classifies the Indian variant as a significant threat due to its high potential for contagion.
Argentina has reported cases of the Brazilian variant since February, which many experts say sent the country’s coronavirus situation out of control in 2021.
