Brazil posts lowest Covid-19 death average in nearly two months

Brazil’s seven-day rolling average of confirmed coronavirus deaths reached 2,100 — its lowest level since March 18, according to data from the Health Ministry. Fifty-two days ago, the death average sat at 2,087, before rising sharply.

Seven-day averages are a much more reliable metric to monitor pandemic progress, as they are not affected by potential oscillations in daily tallies — which tend to go fall during weekends and holidays as administrative officials in health departments are understaffed.

Optimism must be tempered with caution, however. Brazil’s seven-day average of new infections remains high, hovering around 60,000. Moreover, experts fear that Sunday’s Mothers’ Day celebrations may lead to a new spike in both case and death curves.
