Uruguay starts Covid-19 cooperation talks with Israel

With a view to launching a combined effort against the coronavirus, health experts from Uruguay and Israel met this week in Montevideo to discuss experiences combating the pandemic.

The country welcomed a delegation from the Sheba Medical Center in Tel Aviv, with the goal to “share information acquired over the past 14 months.”

The experts will visit Uruguayan hospitals and vaccination centers over the next ten days. Israel is currently leading the world’s immunization race, having vaccinated more than 62 percent of its population, according to latest figures.

Meanwhile, Uruguay was among the continent’s leading examples in combating the pandemic, but has become South America’s latest Covid-19 hotbed. Over 80 percent of the country’s 2,391 total pandemic deaths have occurred in 2021, and Uruguay is home to South America’s highest per capita rate of new coronavirus cases in April.

Israel and the pandemic in Latin America

The Covid-19 pandemic has represented a good opportunity for Israel to spread its scientific influence across Latin America. Besides supporting Uruguay, the country is also seeking to produce vaccines in Argentina.

Brazil also contacted Israel with coronavirus-related demands, hoping to import nasal spray against Covid-19.
